Respiration at High Altitudes, Phosphate-Protein-Interaction: Sequence of the Hemoglobins of the Hamster (Mesocricetus aureatus) and the Camel (Camelus fems, Camelidae). Hohenatmung, Phosphat-Protein-Wechselwirkung: Die Sequenz der Hamoglobine des Gold

B SCHRANK ,H WEISNER ,A STANGL ,

The sequence of the main component of the hemoglobin of the hamster and that of the camel (Camelus ferus) is given. The sequence is obtained authomaticaJly by the sequenator using the quadrol and the propyne programme •. The sequence of the a-and (l-ehains of the hamster is compared with the human hemoglobin; the .sequence of the hemoglobin of the camel (Camelus ferus, Camelidae). in comparison to the llama, there are to be found in the a-chains fIVe amino acid exchanges. in the (l-ehains are two exchanges - in (l2 and (l76 - only. The sequence (l2 in camel- the P7-glycerate contac,t - is histidine: This sequence sustains the interpretation of the high altitude respuation of the llama as mutation (l2 His-+Asn. The amino acid sequence of the hemoglobin of Camelus ferus and Camelus dromedarius is identical.

The crystal Structure of Lanthanoid Hexanitrite Complexes, A2A' Ln(NO2)6

J C BARNES ,K A RASOUL ,P HARKINS ,

A single crystal structure ofCs2NaLa(NO )6 and powder determination ofCs NaNd(N02)6 and Rb~NaY(N02)6 show that these compounds ~ave the lanthanoid ion oxygen coorainated and the soidum Ion nitrogen coordinated in an inverse A2A'M(N02)6 structure. La-o = 2.82 A, Na = 2.50 A CS-O = 3.33 A, Rb-Q = 3.23 A. There is no evidence for the existence of strong complex ions in this structure.

Polarographic Study of Nickel (II) Perchlorate and Copper (II) Nitrate in the presence of 2,2' -Bipyridyl in Acetonitrile Solvent.

M A A USMANI ,D B SCAIFE ,

The polarographic study of nickel (IO perchlorate hexahydrate in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridyl gave an evidence for oxidation of nickel (10 to nickel (110 while in the case of copper (II) nitrate study with 2,2'·bipyridyl as a ligand, gave an oxidation wave around 2V which correllponds to the oxidation of nitrate and the ligand rather than copper (IO.

Potentiometric Determination of Ruthenium with Cobalt (III) Acetate

I IJAZ ,M HANIF ,

A simple, precise and quick potentiometric method for the determination of Ru(lIl) from 84.00 ~ to 3.35 mg in a total volum\? of 70.0 ml with a maximum relative standard deviation of 0.7% . using Co(lll) acetate as redox titrant has been devised. Interference effects of foreign ions on this determination have also been investigated.

Preparation of 7-dehydrochoJeaterol (Provitamin D3)

F HUSSIAN ,M ALMA ,

Some of the methods available for comerting cholesterol into 7- dehydrochoJeateroI are reviewed for improving the yield of tmal product by modifying ditTerent steps. The allylic bromination of choleateryl benzoate was done with l,3-dibromo-S,s'ilimethylhydantoin. In the dehydrobromination of 7-bromocholeateryl benzoate an advantageous solvent namely ethyl benzoate was used for the isolation of 7-dehydrocholeateryl benzoate. The yield of provitamin D3 was 43% baaed on choleateryl benzoate.

Rate Constants for Methanolysis and Alkaline Hydrolysis of a Group of Cl 4 Labelled (Radioactive) Steroidal Esters Using a Radiochemical Procedure

A M FARID ,J McKENNA ,

Rate constants for methanolysis of a group of C14 labelled methyl esters of steroidal carboxylic acids were determined by a radiochemical procedure in order to examine the effect of interposition of a methylene group between the steroidal ring system and the carbomethoxy group on the differential reactivity of epimeric esters. The results are of interest regarding the i'lictors controlling the differential rate of alkaline hydrolysis of acyl derivatives of epimeric axial and equatorial alicyclic alcohols. For specific comparison with the methyl easter rate constants, those for the hydrolysis of the epimeric 5-acetoxy-5-a-cholestanewere also measured, again by a radiochemical procedure.
