Use of Donor Scales in selecting the Optimum Solvent for Complexation Reaction of Bi(III) and Sb(ID) in Non-aqueous Medium.

Relative free energy of complex formation of bismuth(lIO with Diphenyl diseleno­phosphate ion in gaseous phase has been calculated through extrathermodynamic method for the iust time in solving the problem arising out of a complicated equilibrium with the participation of organic ligand having a complex structure. A new bi-parameter equation correlating stability constants with Donor and Acceptor number of the solvents has been proposed. This approach can provide sound basis in the selection of optimum solvents for use in Analytical Chemistry and several inorganic prepara­tions. Some practical steps have been underlined.

Spectrophotometric Study on Nickel (II) and Cobalt (II) a-Carboxyphenylhydrazo-diethylmalonate complexes

The stability constants for the formation of type 1:1 complex between Ni(ll) and Co(ll) ions and carboxyphenylhydrazo-diethylmalonate in aqueous medium at pH's 8.6 and 8.8 are 3.43 and 4.08 respectively. The solid complexes were prepared and studied by infrared spectra and ultraviolet to propose their structures.

Mass spectra of 2-chloro-3-(2'-chloroethyl)4-hydroxy-6-pyridone, 2-chloro-3-(2'­ch1oroethyl)-5-nitr04hydroxy-6-pyridone, 2-chloro-l,6,4' ,5' -tetrahydr0-6-oxo-furano(3' ,2' -3,4 )-pyri­dine, 2-chloro-l,6,4' ,5' -tetrachydro-5-brom0-6-oxo-furano (3',2'-3,4) pyridine and 6-acetoxy-2-chloro­4',5'-dihydrofurano (3',2'-3,4) pyridine (I-V) have been studied and their fragmentation patterns have been rationalized. 1n all these compounds a bicyclie ion has been found to be very stable which loses chlorine (except in compound II) to give a very stable ion of mass 136.

Analysis of 13 C NMR Spectra of Some Phenyl Acetates

Study of 13 C NMR chemical shifts, 1, 13 coupling constants and T 1 measurements 13 C-H lead to reliable analysis of C NMR spectra of some phenyl acetates. Influence of some substituents on the electronic environment is reported. The variation of the chemical shifts resulting from different groups allows estimation of the additivity of the chemical shifts of the studied esters. This study confirms the existence of the additive nature of the substituent effect on aryl carbons of the phenyl acetates compared with monosubstituted benzenes.

Catalytic Decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide on Platinium Supported Rare Earth Oxides

Various authorsl-9 have \lied semi-conductors IDd insuJators such II chuc:oal, IiIic:a gel and alu~ gel as promoters for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by platinum catalysts. Walker et al 0 have used glassy carbon II a support. In the present work, it WII found that small quatities of rare earth oxides, cerium (IV) oxide, lanthlDum (1m oxide, pmseodymium (II) oxide, thaDium (IU) oxide and samarium (III) oxide act II strong promoters in the decomposition of aqueous hydrogen peroxide by finely divided platinum. The decomposition products WeJe followed by a volu­metric method. In generll1. the activity of a constant amount of platinum first rises to a peak point and subsequently sinks II the ratio of promoters to the catalyst in further increased. The catalytic activi­ties of these promoters follow the sequence: ceO~ L'203> Pr6011> n203> Sm203' The apparent activation energy of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solutions have been determined at various temperatures. It is shown that there is a dependence of the activation energy on the temperature, A strict logarithmic dependence of the activation energy results in the disappearence of the promoter action of the supports at low temperatures. The surfaCe of the oxides studied WII thus shown to be irregulady heterogenous.

Complexes of aromatic diamines with copper (II) salts have been prepared and cha­racterized by infra-red, electronic spectral analysis and magnetic measurements. The complexes are of the type CuLX2; where L=o-phenylenediamine and X=Cl: or Bi, having a polymeric octahedral structure; and CuL~2; where L=o-phenylenediamine, 1,8-diaminonapthalene or 2,2-diamin0bi­phenyl, and x=cr, Bi, NOj CL04 and 804 which are shown to be of a distorted octahedral nature.

Brominated Phenolic Resin Based Vulcanization of Butyl Rubber

Brominated phenol formaldehyde resin was utilised to vulcanize butyl rubber in the presence of carbon black as well as in the absence of carbon black. UnfDled vulcanizates were found to conform to the Monney-Rivlin equation in their stress elongation behaviour. Cross-linking efficiency of the resin was deduced and the gel point was found in the vjcinityof the concentration O.S PHR of resin.

The Synthesis and Characterization of Thiaminium Tribromocadmium (ll) and Thiaminium Triiodocadmium (II) Complexes

Thiarninium tribromocadmium (II) and thiaminium triiodocadmium (II) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis. proton and 13c nmr techniques. The chemical shifts and splitting pattern of amino protons are found independent of the nature of halide ions. Some chemical shifts, however, do show dependence on the electronegativities/polarizabilities of the halide ions.
