Tannery wastewater samples were collected from vegetable tanneries located at charsada road Peshawar (Pakistan). The samples were chemically evaluated for parameters like; pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solids (TTS), total dissolved solid (TDS) biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), and chemical oxygen demand (COD).. it was found that the effluents contained very high COD (>10,000 mg O2/l) and high concentration of TSS.TDS and BOD, which render if harmful for aquatic life when discharge into the Kabul River without any treatment. A process has been developed to detoxify the tannery effluents applying physiochemical followed by biological method (sequencing batch reactor, SBR). The TSS, COD and BOD5 were substantially decreased employing the developed treatment technique. Overall, BOD and COD were both decreased by 98.74%. the resulting sludge from SBR was found to have good setting characteristics.
