In order to determine the utility of coal for power generation ( in a combustion system) fixed carbon, ash and sulfur contents are normally determined. Fifteen samples of coal from different 1 ocalities of NWFP have been analysed for moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon, ash, sulfur and calorific values. The Moisture content ranged from 0.4% to 17.42%, volatile matter from 3.52% to 40.12%, fixed carbon from 2.08% to 74.45% ash fromj 6.85% to 76.23% and calorific values from 92 B.t.u/ Ib to 14116 B.t.u/Ib. the sulfur contents ranged from 1.08% to 6.61% thus showing mostly permissible limits for commercial ultization of coal. Then calculated classification of given coals of ASTM Rank with the help of these parameters. For coking purposes the coal sample Orakzai-008 is most suitable due to its anthracite nature. Then also compared with other thermal coal samples of major coal fields of Pakistan.
