A simple indirect spectrophotometric determination of sulphide is described. The method is based upon the displacement of thiocyanate ions from mercury (II) thiocyanate by sulphide ions. The released thiocyanate ions react with iron (III) to form iron (I I I)-thiocyanate complex which ;s determined spectrophotometrically. The effects of a number of factors like time, temperature, concentration and diverse ions are investigated. The method is useful for both the soluble and insoluble sulphide samples.
