Tetrahydroxy-p-benzoquinone (I) has been reported to react with large number of metal ions and has been used in estimations as metal indicator of precipitant. However, due to its nonselective nature and various colour reactions over a wide range of pH, the use of (I) in analytical separation has not been investigated in past.
